A British baby was found dead in a Corfu hotel cot after his mum left him alone overnight with a bottle.

The 30-year-old woman reportedly put her four-month-old son to bed on Thursday night in a hotel in Argyrades, Greece.

She fed him from a bottle and then left the empty bottle in the cot for him to suck on as he fell asleep.

At about 7:30am the next morning she found him unresponsive and became concerned.

Hotel staff called a doctor who said the baby had died, "probably from drowning".

Upon receiving the devastating news, the woman attempted to jump from the balcony of her hotel room but staff intervened and saved her life at the last minute, Protothema reports.

Greek media report that the grief-stricken mum has been taken to hospital where she is being provided with psychological support.

The results of a full forensic examination into the infant's death are expected today.
