Hundreds evacuated and '26 missing' as landslide smashes into village in Norway

A major landslide has slammed into a village in Norway, causing hundreds to be evacuated from their homes.

Twenty-six people are said to be unaccounted for after the disaster in Ask in in Gjerdrum, according to Norwegian media.

Roger Petersen, coordinating the response, told NKTV that there may be people in collapsed houses and buildings. 

He said that police had received messages from desperate people who had called emergency services, saying that they are under roof tiles and insulation.

‘The situation is serious,’ he said.

Local police tweeted: ‘The police urgently ask that NO residents return to the evacuated zone and their homes. It is associated with great danger and leads to unnecessary use of our resources.’

‘Now it is important that the emergency services get their job done.’
