Kim Jong Un megayacht spotted at secluded beach while leader out of public view

Satellite pictures appear to suggest that Kim Jong Un has been enjoying a holiday on one of his many megayachts.

The apparent vacation is the likeliest explanation for the North Korean leader not making an appearance on state media for 13 days and it follows the 19-day break he took last month.

His latest absence comes at a time when many parts of his country have been hit by floods, which have reportedly damaged a major construction project and crops.

Planet Labs imagery shows that Kim's 180-foot (55-metre) megayacht was docked at a beach on the Hodo Peninsula, north of Wonsan, from August 3 to August 5.

The giant vessel is distinctive, as it has a red-coloured roof that covers its entire length.

Back in August 2017, Kim's slightly smaller 165-foot (50-metre) megayacht was spotted by the same satellites at the same beach, which can only be reached by sea or small roads that are far away from populated areas.

This 180-foot red-roofed megayacht has previously been seen at the Supreme Leader's Wosnan and Hodo Peninsula mansions and has been kept busy in recent months.

It was anchored at Sin Island off the Wonsan coast during Kim's July break and at nearby Tae Island in April, while being repaired or upgraded in between at the 38-year-old dictator's private marina in central Wonsan.

Several of Kim's other megayachts have also been sighted recently.

His 165-foot (50-metre) blue-roofed megayacht has been moored off Tae Island since April.

The largest megayacht Kim owns – a 260-foot (80-metre) craft featuring an Olympic-sized pool and multi-story lounge, appeared earlier this month anchored in an unusual spot near the Kalma Peninsula inside the Wonsan bay, where it had previously been seen in mid-July.

A 195-foot (60-metre) craft, also from his fleet, appeared to be taken out from storage and placed in front of his main Wonsan compound beach from the late part of last week to a couple of days ago.
