This is an increase on Wednesday, when 27,734 new cases were announced, but is still some way off the figures seen earlier this month.
Also on Thursday another 85 people were reported dead within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.
During the middle of July Britain recorded over new 50,000 coronavirus cases for several days, reaching a high point of 60,669 on July 15.
However cases had been falling, with 24,950 announced on Monday and just 23,511 on Tuesday.
However authorities urged caution, arguing it was too early for England’s final unlocking on July 21 to have taken effect.
Thursday also saw another 43,873 coronavirus first jabs reported, along with 171,341 second doses.
According to Government data 77.4 percent of Britain’s adult population are now fully vaccinated, with 88.4 percent having received at least one jab.
