Shocking footage has captured the moment Insulate Britain protesters descended onto the main carriageway of the M25 as fast-moving cars braked and swerved to avoid an accident. The actions of the Insulate Britain mob triggered chaos for rush-hour commuters travelling in both directions along the M25 near Woking, though both lanes have since been cleared. Police attempted to drag protestors of the road one by one onto the hard shoulder and out of the path of vehicles.

Officers from Surrey Police can be seen in the footage doggedly attempting to remove the activist and their banners from the high-speed lanes.

The demonstrations did not appear to resist the police and went limp as they were dragged off, though some managed to rush back onto the carriageway as officers attempt to kettle them on the hard shoulder.

Surrey Police said: “Two lanes on both clockwise and anticlockwise carriageways of the M25 between junctions 9 and 10 are now fully re-opened after officers cleared all of the Insulate Britain protesters off of the road.”

On Monday one enraged motorist told the protestors: “Why the hell do you think this is the right thing to do?

“I know what you’re fighting, I completely agree, this is a really, really good idea, but this is not the way to do it.

“You’re causing more pollution with all these cars sitting here just doing f*** all.

“You’re making people hate you. Go and protest London, go down to Downing Street.”

A spokeswoman for climate groups told LBC last week: “We have tried reasonable protest, we know that the Government doesn’t listen to what the public says and it’s only by taking radical action, it seems, that we’re going to get some kind of radical response to a climate emergency.”

Insulate Britain has also written a letter to Highways England, in which the group state: “People’s safety during this campaign has always been our primary objective.

“Therefore, on the 16th September, we passed a request to the police to slow down the traffic on the southwest parts of the M25 network, as we were aware that supporters of the Insulate Britain campaign would be participating in acts of civil disobedience on that area.

“In the context of the horror of the climate crisis we believe that it is entirely proportionate to create disruption on the motorway network if it means the UK Government fulfills its legal obligation of staying below 2°C which will stop the unimaginable suffering for future generations.

“Our request was refused.”

The group’s spokesman, Liam Norton told LBC on Tuesday morning: “The idea that people would suddenly decide insulating our leaky homes is a bad idea as a result of our campaign is frankly laughable. We are simply asking the government to get on with the job.

“The people of Britain understand that climate change is a severe threat to everything they hold dear. They are looking to the government for leadership.

“We have a practical solution and have received encouragement for our aims from many construction industry professionals.”
