The Princess of Wales was in Paris at the time and the young princes were enjoying a holiday at Balmoral in Scotland with the Royal Family. When the phone rang, they weren’t to know that it would be the last time they would speak to their mother. Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997 along with her companion Dodi Fayed and their driver Henri Paul.

William was 15 years old and Harry just 12 at the time.

In an interview with ITV marking the 20th anniversary of her tragic death, the brothers recalled that last phone call they had with her.

William said: “At the time, Harry and I were running around minding our own business, you know, playing with our cousins and having a very good time.”

The Duke was likely referring to his cousins Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, who are three and one year older than him respectively.

Alternatively, he may be referring to Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are four and five years younger than Harry respectively.

Harry added: “As a kid I never enjoyed speaking to my parents on the phone.

“And we spent far too much time speaking on the phone rather than speaking to each other, because of the way the situation was.

“And the phone rang and off [William] went to go and speak to her sort of for five minutes.”

The situation Harry referred to is Princess Diana and Prince Charles’ split in 1992, and divorce in 1996, meaning he and William only ever spent time with them separately, never together.

William continued: “I think Harry and I were just in a desperate rush to say goodbye, you know, see you later and we’re going to go off.

“If I’d known now obviously what was going to happen I wouldn’t have been so blasé about it and everything else.

“But that phone call sticks in my mind quite, quite heavily.”

The Duke of Cambridge added that he did recall what she said to him, but wanted to keep it private.

Harry said he remembered being called to take his turn at the phone.

He said: “It was her speaking from Paris.

“I can’t really necessarily remember what I said, but all I do remember is probably, you know, regretting for the rest of my life how short the phone call was.

“And If I’d known that was the last time I was going to speak to my mother the things I would have said to her.

“Looking back on it now, it’s incredibly hard. I have to deal with that for the rest of my life.

“Not knowing that was the last time I was going to speak to my mum, and how differently that conversation would have panned out if I’d had even the slightest inkling that her life was going to be taken that night.”

Tomorrow is Princess Diana’s birthday, when she would have turned 59 years old.

Having tragically died at just 36 years old, William, at 38, is now older than his mother was when she died.

Both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle are also older than Diana was and Harry, 35, is not far off.
