Princess Beatrice and her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi have announced they are expecting their first child together. The baby is due later this autumn and will be “great news” for the Queen who is currently mourning her late husband the Duke of Edinburgh. The baby will be Her Majesty’s 12th great-grandchild, and the fourth to be born in 2021 after Princess Eugenie and Zara Phillips’ baby boys earlier this year and Meghan Markle’s daughter, who is due in the summer.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the news, saying: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are very pleased to announce that they are expecting a baby in autumn of this year. The Queen has been informed and both families are delighted.”

The new royal baby will be 11th in line to the throne, following the birth of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter this summer.

Russell Myers, Royal editor of the Daily Mirror, told Sunrise, “This is great news for the Queen as she’s still in mourning for her dear husband Philip and some good news for the York family as some of them haven’t been having a great time of late.”

Princess Beatrice and her husband wed last July in a secret ceremony at Royal Lodge at Windsor.

The couple’s original wedding date was in May but was postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Their July marriage was also subject to social distancing restrictions.

A handful of close friends and family members attended the wedding, including the Queen and Prince Philip. The bride wore a vintage Norman Hartnell dress with the Queen Mary’s Fringe tiara, both of which were lent to her by the Queen.

Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, a property developer, has a son Christopher Woolf from a previous relationship.

The couple currently reside in London, where Beatrice is Vice President of Partnerships and Strategy at Afiniti.

Beatrice and Edoardo had known each other for a number of years due to a family friendship, however it is believed that they began their romantic relationship in October 2018.

Known amongst friends as Edo, he proposed to the Queen’s granddaughter a year later with a platinum and diamond engagement ring.

The baby will be the Duke of York and his former wife Sarah Ferguson’s second grandchild. Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank welcomed their first child on February 9, 2021.

Their son was named August Philip Hawke Brooksbank in a nod towards his great-grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.
