Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have come under scrutiny for “behaving like they’re doing a royal visit” during their recent jam-packed tour of New York. In a debate on Jeremy Vine, panellist Nana Akua branded the couple’s behaviour “sickening” as they attended several meetings with leading politicians, despite stepping down from the Royal Family in 2020.

When asked about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s recent appearance, panellist Nana Akua said: “To be honest with you, I’m absolutely sick to my back teeth of this couple if I’m totally honest with you.

“I mean why on earth, they don’t want to be royal, they didn’t want the publicity, now here they are once again, having taken private jets again to do this.

“They’ve got all this thing going on, behaving as though they’re doing a royal visit, the very thing that they didn’t want to do in the UK.

“I just find it all a bit sickening.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in New York last Wednesday evening and embarked on a three-day tour of the city.

On Thursday morning, they visited the One World Trade Centre, where they were joined by New York’s Mayor, Bill de Blasio, and the New York State Governor, Kathy Hochul.

The couple participated in a photocall both inside and outside the building, before visiting the 9/11 museum and laying a wreath of white roses for the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Following this, they held a meeting with Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US ambassador to the UN, and participated in a roundtable discussion with the World Health Organisation.

In a statement released afterwards, the Sussexes said: “In this room, we had a number of the foremost leaders on public health, pandemic preparedness, scientific progress, and community building. Today’s meeting was a much-appreciated opportunity to learn from some of the most respected experts who are working tirelessly to end this pandemic.

“Building on ongoing conversations we’ve had with global leaders over the past 18 months, today further reinforced our commitment to vaccine equity.”

On the Friday, the couple visited PS 123 Mahalia Jackson, a primary school in Harlem where 94 percent of the intake come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

In an event designed to promote children’s literacy, Meghan Markle read her book ‘The Bench’, which was published earlier this summer.

On Saturday, Meghan and Harry visited the United Nations to meet with its Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, in which they discussed issues around vaccine equity, climate action, the empowerment of women, youth engagement, and mental wellbeing.

The couple’s final engagement took place on the Saturday evening, when they appeared at the Global Citizen Live concert to urge world leaders to develop a program to deliver vaccines to impoverished nations.

In a highly political speech, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hit out at the “ultra-wealthy pharmaceutical companies” for not sharing the details of their vaccines.

Whilst in New York, the couple stayed at The Carlyle hotel, which is typically used by members of the Royal Family for official engagements.

The Sussexes were also accompanied by several security guards, as well as a number of NYPD officers and sniffer dogs.

They have now returned to California to be with their two young children, Archie Harrison, and Lilibet Diana. The family have resided in Montecito since stepping away from the Royal Family last year.
